Looking for testimonials

Testimonials and faces for our website – by Regan Jules Macquet

As mentioned at the 19th January meeting, I need a short testimonial from all TM members for our website. The testimonial should be 100-300 words and be about why you joined TM and what you have gained from the experience. I also need 4-5 volunteers to showcase their member profile on the website. For this I need a good photo and a short bio of about 500-600 words. This is all to add a more human face to the TM website. Please email me your submissions to secretary@toastmasters.co.za by early Feb 2012. Thanks! Regan Jules Macquet

17th November 2011 – Movember meeting

17th November 2011 Movember meeting By Regan Jules Maquet

Givemore Mashingaidze opened the meeting and handed over to Dafne Nienhuys, the President. Dafne welcomed everyone and handed over to the Toastmaster of the Evening, Glen Simpson.  In honour of Movember, Glen sported a black false beard, which he shortly took off after he accidentally ate parts of it while speaking.

The theme of the evening was Movember, which Glen explained was a movement to raise awareness about men’s health issues. He spoke briefly about the origins of the Movember movement.

The evening’s speakers were:

  • Martha Mphahlele
  • Ross Wilson
  • Jaco Cronje
  • Lance Brown.

Martha did her first speech at Toastmasters, which was about her experiences growing up in Swaziland.  Ross spoke about the frustration of being a single man which has led him to experiment with internet dating. Jaco gave the speech he intends to give to his staff at work, as he has recently being promoted to departmental head.  Lance gave a rendition of Barak Obama’s 2008 election victory speech.

Belinda Palmer acted as the timekeeper and delivered her report, after which we adjourned for dinner.

After dinner, Givemore continued the proceedings with some minor agenda changes as the meeting was running a little late. The earlier speakers’ evaluators gave their reports:

  • Givemore Mashingaidze for Martha
  • Barry Ger for Ross
  • Dafne Nienhuys for Jaco
  • Nicky Abdinor for Lance

After the evaluations, the meeting proceeded to Table Topics, which was facilitated by Barry Ger.  The theme was being stranded on Mars with whatever props were pulled from a sports bag.  The object was to explain the prop to the audience of Martians. The props included a cricket ball, a razor, a cricket bat, a rubber knife and a remote control.

After Table Topics, the timekeeper gave her second report on the evaluators.

Dafne Nienhuys acted as the Ah Counter and Fine Master and issued fines to various members. Givemore collected the voting slips for best speakers and prizes were awarded. Dafne Nienhuys then closed the meeting.

October fest – by Lisa Huan

October 4th – October fest – by Lisa Huan

I attended E&Y Toastmaster Club’s event for the first time on October 4th, with the exciting theme of Oktoberfest!  I was warmly welcomed by fellow Toastmasters, and truly enjoyed the laidback, familial atmosphere!  2 hours flew by and before I knew it, the official Toastmaster session was over.

Listening to various speeches, I was deeply touched by the speakers’ passion for continuous learning, personal growth, and development of others. Within the first 15minutes, I knew I have found an amazing group of people whom I can share ideas and learn from!

I am excited to join the E&Y Toastmaster family :)

Jon Jon San Juan gave the agenda amendments,  Belinda took over from Kathy Hounsell (timekeeping) and Dafne from Barry (evaluation). Our los it Toastmaster of the Evening, Thomas  Bowman. Yes we can , 19May 2011

Yes we can , 19May 2011 – by Estella Minnaar

Givemore Mashingaidse, the Toastmaster of the Evening opened with Toast about Rise after we fall.

The Speaker Assignments followed:

Lance Brown did his CC9, entitled ‘Now is the time to act’. He urged the audience to look for new opportunities by using their TM acquired skills to network and approach people.

Jon Jon San Juan’s speech was entitled ‘ See a city with lesser crime/ get out and coach  those who best need it, or fund them’. He compare crime statistics of Cape Town with those of LA and explained with personal examples how each person in the audience can make a difference in their community.

Berry Ger. CC10 was appropriately entitled Finish what you start.

His very memorable message was that all tasks are not worth finishing. All finished tasks don’t have to be perfect. You have to review your tasks. Set a fixed time. Keep track of progress with an end in sight. You have to decide to end the project, delegate or finish it.

Finish it to learn from experience, get on with life, have something to show. Stop making excuses (time, money, fam life, work)’.

Rehana Rutti also had a moving message about making a difference. We are here to give and not to take. It’s not what we do but how we do it. We are not here merely to make a living but to enrich, to amplify, to hope and to achieve.

We must lead, inspire, dream, lead an example. Reinforcement happens through self-approval  and self validation.

The guest speaker was Chris Callagan, who did his AC28 – expertly telling a very entertaining story about his chance meeting of chinese-looking Nadine – to be his wife of many years. He danced with her at a wedding and actually managed to track her parent’s address down months after the wedding and the rest is history as they say.  Such a great story of how one that persists in a great cause will succeed in the end!

Philip Robinson did a very informative and eye opening speech about one of the most actual topics and buzzwords today – the carbon footprint.

His speach ‘ The silent killer of our earth’ used tons of really usefull examples to explain how to help saving the natural resources of the earth.

A few handy examples are:

-turning off of appliances not in use,

- turning down central heating or you geyser slightly,

-installing time switches,

-completely filling up your washing machine/ dishwasher while

- only filling your kettle with as much water as needed,

- doing your weekly shopping in one single trip,

- hanging out laundry in the sun to dry instead of tumble drying,

-using tap water instead of bottled water,

-buying local grown fruit and veg and other products made locally,

-recycle as much as possible

-using lightbulbs that lasts longer and saves energy,

-insulating your hot water tank/ loft walls,

-Recycling ‘grey water’ and

-Replacing your old refrigerator

The Speaker Assignments of 19 May were about a rich variety of topics. It was very inspirational, entertaining, motivating and educational.  Yes We Can. No one can argue with that after such a successful night!
